Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on 2024-7-31, while attending the installment of Iran’s new president, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hamas announced.

Haniyeh, 62, rose to become Hamas’ political chief and was one of Israel’s top targets for punishment for the October 7 massacre that killed 1,200. No one immediately claimed responsibility for his assassination.

Iranian media reported that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed at a Tehran home where they was staying while attending Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swear-in ceremony on Tuesday.

The assassination occurred within 24 hours of an Israeli strike that killed a top Hezbollah leader in Lebanon.

Haniyeh was killed along with his bodyguard in the official guest house of the Revolutionary Guards in the Shimran neighborhood in the north of the Iranian capital, while the leader of the Islamic Jihad, Ziad Nakhale, who was staying on another floor, was not the target of the attack.
Israeli sources refuse to comment on this attack, but it should be mentioned that in the past there have already been several operations against Iranian targets, including those of the nuclear program, which were carried out by means of squads that emerged from inside Iran.
Media outlets in Iran reported this morning that an investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of Haniyeh’s assassination, and clarified that its results will be published “soon”. It was also reported this morning in Iran that the preliminary results of the investigation show that Haniyeh was killed tonight at 02:00, and it was reported that an aerial target hit the residence where he was staying. It was not stated whether it was a missile, an unmanned aerial vehicle or a projectile.
The New York Times journalist on Iranian affairs reported this morning that senior officials in Iran are in “total shock” following the assassination, which raises major question marks about Iran’s ability to secure its space against external threats. Al-Mayadeen quoted the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee in Iran’s parliament, who said that the assassination operations “will undoubtedly receive a response.”
Against the backdrop of Tehran’s threats to harm Israel, and also against the backdrop of the fear of a widespread response by Hezbollah following the assassination of the senior leader Fouad Shakr yesterday, the American Secretary of Defense clarified this morning, once again, that the USA will help Israel if it is attacked. “If Israel is attacked – of course we will help it defend itself “, said Minister Lloyd Austin.
